General information:
The UCSF Travel Medicine and Immunization Clinic provides comprehensive pre-travel care to the UCSF community. Clinic visits will include a pre-travel medical evaluation, education about prevention of illness, prescriptions for prophylaxis against diarrheal and vector-borne disease, as well as administration of necessary immunizations. Available immunizations include yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, typhoid, hepatitis A, rabies, meningococcal meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and others.
Some immunizations require a series of injections over a 3-4 weeks period and take weeks to reach full effectiveness. Therefore, we ask that you please make your appointment at least 6-8 weeks prior to departure to ensure full protection during travel.

How to prepare for your clinic visit:
Prior to your visit please collect a list of your active medical problems, present medications, list of prior immunizations (with date of administration), and a detailed itinerary of planned destinations and activities planned during your travel abroad. Once your clinic visit is scheduled, please go to the website www.travelMDus.org. Please click on “U California, San Francisco” as the site of your upcoming appointment. Please fill in the electronic form as completely as possible prior to visit. When you are done filling out the form, please retain your confirmation number to bring with you to your visit.
Billing/Referrals/Payment:
All insurance carriers are welcome; however, many insurance carriers require prior authorization and a referral from a primary care provider, or do not cover this type of visit at all. Therefore, all patients will be asked to complete a waiver acknowledging that they are responsible for payment of the cost of the clinic visit upon arrival. When the patient is self-pay, the clinic visit charge will be reduced 30%. Immunization costs must be paid for on the day of the visit, and the patient will be provided an itemized receipt which can be submitted to their insurance company for evaluation of partial or full reimbursement.
Certain immunizations and testing (MMR, hepatitis B, varicella, Tdap, and tuberculosis skin testing) are available free of charge to UCSF employees with direct patient care contact. For more information on these free of charge immunizations and testing please call the UCSF Occupational Health Clinic at 415-885-7580.
